The Brief: To design a brochure to promote and commemorate the opening of the Lincoln-based International Bomber Command Centre. The IBCC is a memorial to the thousands of Bomber Command aircrew who lost their lives during the Second World War, so the project needed a sombre and sensitive approach.
The inspiration for completing this project came directly from original photography of World War 2 planes used by Bomber Command. Respecting the integrity of those pictured, the photos were carefully selected and enhanced, creating a contrast to the contemporary maps and artists’ drawings of the site. A gentle nod to the shape of airplane wings was used in the text-boxes on each page.
A clean, simple typographic style was chosen, reflecting the markings on the planes, and giving visual clarity. A subtle use of a red, white and blue colour theme ensured that the very ‘British’ nature of the IBCC was reinforced.
Overall, a sensitive approach to the subject matter of the memorial was maintained: the resulting limited edition brochure gave the IBCC a clear brand image for its launch, and was a professional commemorative keepsake marking the inauguration of a significant RAF memorial.
